Del Tech offers sole surgical tech program in Delaware

September 1, 2015
Surgical technologists play a significant role in the operating room. Working with a team of registered nurses and surgeons, surgical technologists handle the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during a surgical procedure. They also anticipate the needs of the surgical team and monitor the environment to maximize patient safety.
The profession is growing – the U.S. Department of Labor projects the employment of surgical technologists to increase 30 percent by 2022 – and opportunities exist locally in hospitals and outpatient surgical centers throughout the state and region.
To help meet the demand for highly-trained and skilled surgical technologists, the Delaware Technical Community College Terry Campus in Dover offers the state’s only surgical technology associate degree program.
The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA). It also boasts a 100% participation and pass rate on the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) examination and has been presented a merit award from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) for achieving that pass rate.
Its excellence has also been noted and acknowledged by the national Association of Surgical Technologists (AST), as program coordinator Tina Gary was recently named the AST Didactic Instructor of the Year and the overall program was honored with an AST Galaxy Star Award.
Students in the program utilize a fully-equipped lab designed and outfitted to replicate a realistic operating room. The lab gives students the opportunity to experience situations and scenarios as they would actually occur in a surgery setting. It also allows student to become familiar with today’s modern technology and equipment, and acquire the specialized skills required to use it.
Upon completion of the program, graduates are prepared to start a career as a surgical team member or obtain a position in a sterile processing department. Job placement assistance is available through the on-campus Career Services Center.
